Aleksandras Vozbinas. Lithuanian artist, painter.

Aleksandras Vozbinas, (born 5th of march 1958 in Vilnius/Lithuania) is a leading figure in contemporary intellectual Lithuanian painting, distinguished by his powerful imagination and thoughtful reflection on his own work. He is a classical type of “lone wolf” who keeps walking the “path of art” that he has mapped out for himself without looking round. Like many independent-minded artists, he is characterized by a complicated emotional relation to his environment, a wish to shock, to defy the views of bourgeois lifestyle and taste, and a tendency to lay bare the hidden aspects of human existence. He attaches the most importance to the metaphorical perception of reality marked with inner dramatism and various shades of tragedy. This extremely industrious artist brimming with volcanic energy has been successfully working in many fields for more than three decades. Distinguished by conceptual thinking, he is also engaged in curatorial activity, and has made a considerable contribution to organizing plein-air painting sessions “Soutine Days” and developing the international relations of Lithuanian painters.

LIFE:

In 1982 Aleksandras Vozbinas entered the State Art Institute of the Lithuanian SSR, studied painting. He graduated in 1988. Studied prof. in Augustin Savick's studio.

Since 1990 Member of the Union of Lithuanian Artists (since 1997 he was elected to the LDS council).

The artist participated in more than 300 different exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. The number of author's exhibitions exceeds 50. He was the curator of many exhibitions, the organizer of plein-air exhibitions in Lithuania (international plein-air exhibition "Soutine's Days" in Vilnius, 1998-2014) and abroad.

The works have been acquired by the Lithuanian Art Museum, the Lithuanian Art Foundation, Vilnius municipality, National Martynas Mažvydas Library, Sharjah Art Museum, private individuals in Lithuania and abroad.

ARTWORK:

At the beginning of his creative path, the artist's works could be assessed as a kind of non-conformist painting, inspired by the paradoxes of the Soviet era. A. Vozbin was greatly influenced by expressionist painting. Already then, the essential features of the artist became apparent - the pursuit of professionalism, detachment from literature, highlighting the essence of the art of plastic painting. About 1994-1995 a new stage of A. Vozbin's pictorial evolution begins, when the elements of abstraction and poetic surrealism became the most important. Since 2000 A. Vozbin's canvases, full of fresh energy, based on the tension of fighting colors, are replaced by ironic paintings. These paintings form a different, meditative, and often grotesque relationship with the world.

According to art theorist prof. For Antanas Andrijauskas, the painter Aleksandars Vozbins, not only the power of the stroke, the emotionality of color, the spontaneous play of energetic lines, unexpected spills of paint, but also the structural principles of painting are important: first of all, composition, harmonious or conflicting relationships between spaces, lines, and colored spots. The canvases expressing the playful nature of the artist Alexander Vozbin evoke dramatic experiences of the viewer with their suggestive magic of colors and lines.

The artist himself was particularly interested in geopolitics and history. These themes are often reflected in the painting of Alexander Vozbin.
