Jürgen Waller, (born June 21, 1939 in Düsseldorf; † February 20, 2022 in Bremen) was a German painter. From 1990 to 2002 he headed the Bremen University of the Arts as rector.
LIFE:
In 1959, Jürgen Waller began studying at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, but dropped out after two semesters. From 1960 to 1968 he stayed in Vallauris, Varreddes and Paris. In 1963, Waller received the Premier Prix de la Jeune Peinture de la ville d'Argenteuil. From 1968 to 1976 he lived and worked in Berlin. Jürgen Waller was a member of the German Artists' Association. Between 1972 and 1987, Waller took part in a total of ten DKB annual exhibitions. In 1972 he was a co-founder of the group Aspect. In 1977 he was appointed professor at the University of Art and Music in Bremen. In 1989 he was elected rector of the Bremen University of the Arts. Re-elections as rector followed in 1994 and 1999. During his time as rector, he initiated a variety of reforms that continue to shape the university today.
From 1993 to 1998 he was chairman of the conference of presidents and rectors of German art universities and during this period he also represented the art and music universities in the Senate of the University Rectors' Conference.
Jürgen Waller founded the Society for Contemporary Art in 1981. His idea, together with the collector and gallery owner Reinhard Onnasch, led to the founding of the New Museum Weserburg in Bremen in 1991. Jürgen Waller was a member of the advisory board of the Poll Art Foundation, Berlin.
Waller lived in Vallauris and Bremen.
