Bremer Kunstpreis (Art award of the city of Bremen) winners exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bremen
About Bremer Kunstpreis (also The Böttcherstrasse Art Prize):
The Böttcherstrasse Art Prize (germ. Kunstpreis der Böttcherstraße) in Bremen is one of the most traditional and at the same time most important awards for contemporary art in Germany. It was awarded for the first time in 1954. Every two years, ten curators independently nominate an artist from the German-speaking region, whose positions will be presented as part of a competitive exhibition in the Kunsthalle Bremen. Based on the exhibition, a five-member international jury will determine the winner during the exhibition period.
The prize, worth 30,000 euros, is supported by the donors' circle of the art association in Bremen. The circle of donors also enables the purchase of a work by the respective prize winner. The Kunsthalle Bremen collection was expanded to include works by Martin Honert, Ólafur Elíasson, Wolfgang Tillmans, Tino Sehgal, Ulla von Brandenburg and Thea Djordjadze, among others. In the past, the award winners and proposed artists included numerous names who received great attention on the international art scene in the following years. These include, for example, Wolfgang Tillmans and Tomma Abts, who were later awarded the Turner Prize, as well as Dirk Skreber, who received the National Gallery Prize for Young Art.
History of the Bremer Kunstpreis:
The Bremen Art Prize (1985–1991) or the Böttcherstrasse Art Prize in Bremen (since 1993) has been supported by the donor group for the Böttcherstrasse Art Prize in Bremen since 1985. The donor group was founded in 1985 by members of the art association in Bremen as holders of the art prize. The merger forms an independent, non-legal association within the art association.
The aim of the circle is to establish an art prize on the Böttcherstrasse in Bremen, which is intended to honor artists living in the German-speaking area every two years: artists who have not yet received public recognition commensurate with the quality of their works. A specific artistic direction is not decisive.
The Founders' Circle appoints a ten-member proposal committee, of which the Founders' Circle is also a member. Each member of this commission nominates one artist for the group exhibition, which takes place every two years. At the end of the exhibition, the members of the jury (who cannot be members of the nomination committee) determine the winner. The Bremen Art Prize and the Böttcherstrasse Art Prize in Bremen are successors to the Böttcherstrasse Art Prize, which was awarded between 1954 and 1983.
